Advanced: Chapter Player - Clip scheduling and DMX Events

The chapter player is a function provided by Igloo Playback that allows a video to be split up into multiple “events” - these events could be a pause, to loop a specific section of the video, or to call preconfigured DMX events, such as changing the lighting level in the room.

Upon selecting a clip in Playback, an Edit Events tab becomes available in the top right of the screen:

Selecting this tab will allow a user to add the events mentioned previously to the selected clip.

In this tab there are 2 sub tabs to define the type of events to be called - DMX events and chapters:

Chapters:

Chapters define internal events to split up a movie

The Chapter Markings sub menu allows a user to define how the chapter locations are determined - Time is the time the chapter is due to start, measured in seconds, Frame Numbers is the specific individual frame a chapter starts/ends on, and is measured on a frame index. Finally Playhead is a normalised value - the movie’s length is 1, so halfway through the movie would be 0.5.

Adding a chapter creates a new chapter that can then be edited:

Selecting the New Chapter populates a menu on the right hand side that can be populated to edit the event

Name is just an identifier. This doesn’t effect functionality.

Action defines what the chapter does. There are 3 actions to choose from:

Play: this is the basic behaviour of the movie - it will just play from the start to the end of the chapter before advancing to the next chapter.

Pause: pauses the movie at the defined time (Pause time). The duration is indefinite and must be moved on using an OSC message to move to the next chapter.

Loop: loops a section of the movie from the loop start time to the loop end time, for a number of loops defined by the loop box.

In addition to these actions, each action can also send an OSC message at the start of the chapter. This could allow a user to change the volume mid way through a clip, for instance

IP: the IP address of the machine the OSC message is to be sent to. localhost means “This PC” for the purpose of networking.

Address: the OSC message to be sent to the defined IP. The Igloo Software OSC protocols can be found in the reference guides

Port: The network address the message is to be set to. Port details can be found in the reference guides but Igloo software typically communications on 9000-9010

Delay: adds a delay to when the message is sent from the chapter start.

Arguments: adds arguments to the OSC message. These are values, typically, but not always normalised. Refer to the reference guides

DMX Events:

Additionally, Igloo Playback can handle DMX events. DMX Events are created and edited as XMLs, and will likely have been configured at install. Please contact Igloo support for a more full run through of how to create events.

Adding a preset to a movie follows a similar pattern of adding an event, selecting a preset, and selecting the start time and duration of the fade.
