Winter 2021 - Warping

Introduction

Warping is Igloo's method of fitting projection to projection screens, and creating seamless images via overlaps. Note that this guide will all use simulated warping on a 2D plane, and while the primary functions are transferable, there's no strict single way to warp, and warping structures with projection will be different on a case by case basis.

Operation:

Starting with 2 projectors with the default warping applied:

Open

1. Power the tablet

2. Ensure the tablet is connected to the same network as the computer is on

3. Open TouchOSC

4. In the OSC settings, ensure the host field is set to the IP address as seen here

5. Ensure the outgoing port is set to 9004 and the incoming port is set to 9003 (default settings)

6. Open the warping tab:

8. Using the buttons in the bottom right, ensure warping is on and blending is off. Turn on the info panel, test cards, control points using the 3 buttons labelled info, points and tcards
   
   

9. Set the overlap. This is measured as a percentage and the "optimal" value will change based on structure and projector model. Notice the green lines at the edge of the grids appear to be moving to the centre of the grids: (10% overlap applied here)
   
   

10. Use the buttons on the row labelled Active Screen to switch between the grid you're currently manipulating, represented by the thick red outline on the info boxes (Screen 1 on image below)

11. Use the outer push buttons to select a control point, the inner push buttons to nudge the points, and the buttons labelled small, medium and large to change the size of each nudge

12. Line up the test cards from each projector on top of each other in the overlap area. Ensure the boxes are equally sized on both projected images, the green vertical line being the most important aspect to line up.
    
    

13. Once the green line is matched, select the handles to the left or right of the corner handles and push them up or down to match the top and bottom of the screen in the structure. Repeat for each corner

14. Finely adjust each corner so the grids are aligned.

15. Regularly save progress on the Load/Save tab located next to the warping tab

16. Once warped, ensure blending is on using the blending button in the bottom right. Play some content and adjust the width and gamma until the image appears to be one seamless image

17. Exit and restart the warper once complete
